Ipoh pairs limestone caves and colonial shophouses with some of Malaysia’s best kopi and cheap eats, just two hours north of KL. It rewards travellers who slow right down. Reach it by a short flight, the comfortable ETS train, or an easy drive up from Kuala Lumpur. The train is the relaxed choice and drops you near the old town. Getting around

Ipoh works year-round, though weekdays are noticeably quieter and cheaper than weekends. Public holidays push both the crowds and the prices up — dodge them if you can.
